Platforms Characteristics |
As social beings, humans look for connection to shorten the social distance. Many individuals and organizations are utilizing virtual reality (VR) for the first time. Social VR platforms are seeing a dramatic increase in use. Businesses also are using VR to communicate across distances, to prototype solutions, and guide decisions. In this article, we invite you to come along with us as we travel together, a European developer (me) and an American designer (Heather Dodds, Ph.D.), into virtual space to discover that the most important connection is behind the avatar. We considered Social VR platforms in this article, from a 2D perspective. #UserExperience #Technology #AltspaceVR #Hubs #FrameVR #VirBELA #SomniumSpace #Engage #rumii #RecRoom #iSeeVC #JanusXR #VESTAJanusXR #Sansar #NeosVR #Anyland #Cryptovoxels #sinespace #3D #2D #virtualconferences |

Playing with augmented reality |
Finally managed to finish this. The project was based in teaching children to usie Doga L3 to model 3D objects for viewing with an augmented reality app on a smartphone/tablet. The theme, ROV's, was based on an educational contest. Children modelled rov's in Doga, exported them to VRML (and they do love to play with VRML models). We converted the files to the OBJ format and spent a few fun moments of very high wow factor using augmented reality. |

Playing with Sketchup |
As some of you know, I'm an elementary school teacher currently teaching iCT to the 7th ad 8th year of basic schooling. I try to teach them, in the basic form that the short semesters allow for, how to use creatively computer technology with activities that range from 3D modeling to scratch programming and video editing. Sketchup is one the most popular tools between my pupils and some of them create amazing stuff. Wich is pretty awesome, considering that they're very young (think 12-14 year olds) and this is the very first experience with 3D modeling software. Here are some examples of the work created in ICT class. I use Sketchfab to host them because of the simplicity of this web service.
This is an interpretation of the Anikhytera mechanism.
For this project the student modeled the outside and some of the innards of a computer. We ran out of time just when he was starting to work on the cd-rom drive...
And finally this very cool house created by two pupils. You can see more of the models created by these pupils here: Sketchfab AEVP.

Ponte de Lima – Castelo Século XIV Overview |
This world shows the reconstruction of Muralhas de Ponte de Lima, located in the district of Viana do Castelo, one of many sites to visit in Portugal. Today little remains of the defenses of one of the oldest villages of the country, but this 3D world gives us the possibility to make a short visit to what once were the great defenders of the village on the banks of the river Lima. When we enter this world, we are facing the wall and if we follow the bridge we will enter the fortress. Once inside, we don’t have much more to see, because the charm of this world is really on the outside and the pleasure of seeing something that in reality is no longer possible.

Ponte de Lima – Vila an Overview |
Visiting the virtual world of Ponte de Lima allows anyone who has never visited the area, to know her a little. This is a world that represents the area of the riverside town of Ponte de Lima, ranging from the Chapel of Our Lady's Guide to the Chapel of St. Anthony's Old Tower on the north bank of the river Lima. For those unfamiliar, Ponte de Lima is a Portuguese village in the district of Viana do Castelo, in the northern region of Portugal, with roughly 2800 inhabitants. It is characterized by its medieval architecture and all its surrounding area on the River Lima, all of which is perfectly recreated in this fantastic 3D representation. This world only fails to be as detailed as we enter a little into the village, since only the facades of houses on the main streets have textures to re-create them, but I think this world will, eventually, see some development, since it’s a great idea for all of us to know a little bit more of our historical towns.
