GyroCamWebGL by Marks
Rotate the camera to look around using the Gyroscope in a WebGL game, in the same fashion as this example. No VR/AR, just the look around feature. It uses a stripped down threejs to have the exact same effect, done in an efficient way.
I wanted to use the gyroscope on a WebGL game for a client project, and despite finding many gyroscope assets on the store, none of them supported WebGL. So here you go. In addition, it attempts to go full screen and adjust the field of view when switching the phone's orientation.
HOW TO USE:
1 - Import package.
2 - Attach the script GyroCamWebGL under the Scripts folder to the camera you want to rotate.
3 - Invoke the callJavascriptRequest method on that script. Do it on a pointerdown event to request gyroscope permission and fullscreen permission. Doing it on a pointerdown is a must. Gyroscope permission is necessary for iOS >= 13 and fullscreen permission is necessary for Android. They all need to be requested with user interaction, hence the pointerdown. Note that it's not possible to request fullscreen on iPhone.
An example scene, GyroCamWebGL, is included under the Scenes folder.
The source code is included and heavily commented, so you can modify it to your liking and use it as a learning resource as well.
REQUIREMENTS
1 - Unity version >= 2020.1.0f1.
2 - A browser that implements the following Web Apis : Device Orientation and Orientation Change. Note that there are a myriad of browsers out there, and while having the requirements should make them all work, that may not be true because of specific quirks of each one. I guarantee that it works on iPhone's Safari and Android's Chrome.
3 - A device with a gyroscope.
KNOWN ISSUES
1 - If you rotate the phone around you very fast, you will notice that the horizon line doesn't stay perfectly horizontal and inclines a little. It goes back to normal when you stop though. It's just how the threejs's rotation logic works. If you move at normal speed you won't notice. In practice, I find it perfectly acceptable.
2 - If you keep changing the phone's orientation, it might glitch and not adjust the field of view correctly. This only seems to happen on chrome on iPhone. Not on Safari, or Chrome on Android. Just choose an orientation and stick to it.
3 - On iPhone, if you try to minimize the game while on landscape, it will crash. This is not a problem specific to this asset. I already reported this to Unity. Vote on the issue to get it fixed faster.
FAQ
Q - It doesn't work.
A - Is your Unity version >= 2020.1.0f1? WebGL changed a lot from previous versions. Try disabling compression: Player Settings -> Publishing Settings -> disable compression.
Q - It lags a lot!
A - Use URP instead of SRP, optimize your assets. There are many reasons your app could be lagging, this asset is not one of them.
Q - Why did you use threejs? There are plenty of gyroscope scripts out there.
A - Because it's what I could make it work. I tried a lot of other scripts but they wouldn't work for the Web API. Except one that used the rotation rate instead of the orientation, but it didn't feel smooth.
Q - Wouldn't it be faster to implement the rotation logic on the C# side?
A - I tried that. It's actually marginally slower, ranging from 2-5ms instead of 0-1ms(javascript side).
Q - You don't need a camera parent like on other gyroscope scripts out there?
A - Nope. This script works solely on the camera you attach it to, no other object is created.
