URP Water is designed to have great flexibility without the hassle of complex setup. It is focusing on art direction control rather than physically accurate rendering.

Known Limitations

  • Supports only Universal Render Pipeline.
  • Requires to enable Scene Color and Scene Depth textures.
  • Caustics will disappear when camera is under water.
  • Realtime reflection mode is not compatible with VR.
  • Some features like tessellation and 3D caustics might not be supported on all hardware.

Dynamic Effects

Use any kind of renderer ( particles, trail renderer, mesh etc... ) to dynamically affect the surface of the water. Using the provided or your own shaders, you can affect the normals, foam and displacement of the water surface. 


Vertex Paint

Using vertex paint you can directly add foam, mask displacement or change the opacity of the water.

Editor and runtime solution for generating mesh vertex thickness (inspired by GDC 2011 Colin Barre-Brisebois talk), that can be used in various calculations and effects, including Translucent and Subsurface Scattering shaders.


Editor tool automatically bakes generated result inside a mesh with a variety of save and mesh combine options.

Editor tool supports all render pipelines.


Runtime API returns generated mesh vertex thickness result as the float[] array with values in the range of [0, 1].

The runtime API currently supports only Built-in and Universal render pipelines.
