Hi all,

Hi all,

Had the opportunity to briefly install Oculus, Development Kit 2, and the experience did not went well:

  1. The software appeared easy to install at first glance, an exe was available for windows. Unfortunately oculus is still in beta (version .8) and when trying to install the device several problems occur with drivers not working and other software issues.
    • With OS windows 8.1 the control software alerts about VR server errors and Oculus screen did not show any image. Online forums give some advices on how to deal with it but despite several attempts to reinstall/restart the software, the VR services and the configurations, oculus device screen remained black.
    • With windows 10 oculus screen works immediately when we connect the hdmi cable (even prior to software installation) but now oculus proximity control sensor (the smaller device in the image) throws errors and does not work. This halts the device configuration and therefore we cannot properly configure the image display and use the Oculus device.

Perhaps later, with more time and patience, we will install it but should be reported that by my experience and the huge number of problem reports in forums, oculus installation is problematic at this development stage.

  2. The device itself is uncomfortable. Adding to that we feel entangled among several cables attached to external devices and the PC.

Dev_kit2
The final version of Oculus coming in 2016 will probably solve most software problems of the beta kit release and attenuate some hardware issues but VR Head mounted display devices have to evolve a lot in the comfort area to stimulate its use and convince us to buy. This convincing process could be more effective if they were oriented to Augmented Reality (AR) instead,  like MS Hololens,  or ideally have both features, VR and AR.

So, not ready for prime time

So, not ready for prime time yet? Not really a surprise. I must confess that the enclosed aspect of some contemporary VR headsets creeps me out. The isolation factor is high, and frankly, kind of seems like an old cyberpunk wet dream from the 90's. I honestly believe that AR or hololens-like setups hold more promise as creative technologies, even though, of course, VR is promising, interesting, and will be a very cool niche.
